Seated at a shaded picnic table in Trinity Bellwoods on a beautiful sunny day this summer, Jeff D and I set out to determine who makes the best chocolate almond croissant. The contenders: Clafouti vs Nadege.
Being largely biased toward Clafouti for it's cozy charm over Nadege's stark white and seemingly impersonal interior, I did my best to keep an open mind.
Price-wise, I think the difference was only 5 cents or so - nothing that tipped the scales in favour of one or the other.
Nadege ultimately won by a nose for texture (the perfect ratio of crispy exterior to flakey and then gooey interior) and for having perhaps just a little bit more almond paste than Clafouti's offering.
It was a VERY close race, but ultimately (after what seemed like WAY too much deliberation over a pastry) we both agreed: Nadege has the edge.
