I've been to Pho Avina three times already, and each time it's progressively worse. Especially as I start tasting other Vietnamese restaurants around the valley. I ordered just a regular pho with beef shanks, and spring rolls. Both of the dishes were very mediocre. Lets start with the side vegetable dish they give you; I barely got anything. Just a small clump of bean sprouts, a small twig of basil, a lime, and that's pretty much it. It's just not enough for one person. The beef broth tasted odd to me as well. It does not taste like 2 year old continuously boiled broth, and there is a strange tang to it. It might appease some others though. The spring rolls was also disappointing. There was two tiny shrimps and barely any peanut sauce!. Three shrimp minimum is my rule for spring rolls.
Finally ordered a boba for kicks, and all I have to say for that is yuck. I couldn't even finish it. It was too sweet, and milky. It tasted like they just poured a can of condensed milk into the tea and called it a day. Their Three Colored Drink was equally bad. The red bean was hard and undercooked. Furthermore, there was barely any jelly in there!
The worst part? It's pretty expensive for pho, and isn't worth the price. They're lucky they have a monopoly there especially with Pho 35 closing down. Place Pho Avina in a city with tons of Vietnamese restaurants and it'll go the way of the dodo.
