| - 2 stars for great ambience and good service - would give a 1/2 star for food if Yelp allowed, but not good enough to round up to 3. Let me qualify this review by saying we were motivated by a good experience at Noodles and the in room bio about the Korean executive chef who broke down the making of his signature tuna pizza.
Decor / ambience: excellent. In fact, probably one of the best places on the strip for views of the fountain show and quiet atmosphere for a business dinner or dinner date. Minimalist decor with candles on each table. Drink menu presented via a customized iPad app, which was a little over the top, but fine.
Service: fine, exactly what one would expect from a restaurant trying to market itself more on the fine dining spectrum. Drink glasses always full and empty plates taken away quickly.
Food: herein lies the great and tragic downfall. We began with the tuna pizza and soft shell crab roll. The roll was small for our tastes about a 4 inch cut roll, wrapped in nori and soy. The crab was crisp and fresh though so okay all around. The pizza however left much to be desired. The tortilla on which the tuna lay was burnt and overpowered anything that the chefs could have placed on top. The tuna itself was cut delicately, but tasteless. The order was followed up with ankimo, Saba roll(Holy Mackerel), hamachi roll (Yellowtail Scallion). Ankimo was not true pate, but the tube sort, cut into round circles and lacking in any flavor. The rolls resembled convenient store sushi in appearance - although the rice was soft, there was such an insignificant amount of fish that we really could not taste anything. I really am not trying to be overly dramatic here - looking at some of the photos I post, you will get a feel for what the plates are like. The price for the disappointing food was the final nail. I understand that when going to a place like Yellowtail, you will be overpaying to a certain extent for the ambience and experience. However to not even receive food I could get from places in LA, I.E., Go's Mart, Katsuya, Sugarfish, or Got Sushi for what Yellowtail charges is ridiculous.
Normally, if I do not like a restaurant, I would not return. However, I was so dissatisfied with my experience at Yellowtail, that I felt compelled to review. I do not plan on returning.
