  • This event gets worse and worse every year. Once again the bulk of the large installations were large projection screens. This concept has been recycled ad nauseam since the first iteration of the event, and everyone is tired of seeing these things. Outside of these largely corporately sponsored eyesores, there really wasn't much else to see. Toronto has done a pretty successful job of alienating the city's actual artist community, and the performance artists and buskers that used to be littered everywhere during the event were for the most part absent. The lineups for popular installations were once again unacceptable. Funneling people into small buildings is always a terrible idea for these events - why not bring the art to the streets? It also boggles my mind that it hasn't occurred to anyone to put their installation on an elevated platform. The density of the crowds in areas like Nathan Phillips Square make it impossible to see what's happening, and a little height advantage would do wonders. Really, the whole thing has simply become an excuse for public drunkenness.
