| - This review is for a 60 min full body massage. I chose this place because I work long hours (I usually do not get off until 7:30-8 pm) and they had last minute availability. My neck was killing me at work and has been for a while. I couldn't take it any longer so I called around and checked with a bunch of places between Uptown and Southpark. Pure Relax was the only one that was open late enough and was not booked so I decided to go. While a massage is most of the time better than NO massage, I should have waited. I spent $55 not including tip, and the massage was probably worth $25, and that is being generous.
First of all this place is really asian - and I've had some pretty amazing asian massages from LA to Thailand so I'm not knocking asians in the least (cause I am asian) but don't expect your standard soothing music, darkened rooms and herb-scented spa. The decor is tackey, the music is soft chinese rock, they cover you with a bath towel, not a sheet, and for someone who is 5' 10" this was really minimal coverage. And I'm pretty sure I flashed the guy when he asked me to turn over. Also, It lacked the type of customer service that is standard in American businesses. I was never asked what my problem areas were, if the pressure was too much...he just said, "ok?" and I mean yea I'm ok as in I'm not dying but dude this massage sucks. The entire time I was contemplating whether to get up and cut my losses, or stick it out and hope it gets better. My masseuse was a guy who was probably in his early twenties, and he definitely youtubed how to give massages. The beginning was ok, but probably 35 minutes in I could definitely tell he was running out of stuff to do - he started doing the chop, which, when you think about it, is basically just hitting me. When he pulled that shit I knew it was going down hill. We were already at the bottom of the hill to begin with, it was getting bad. After about 5 minutes of chopping he finally stopped 10 minutes early. All the reviews keep talking about someone named "Karen" and I hope this dude was not Karen otherwise I've lost all faith in yelp.
Now I'm not completely discounting this place since their foot massages may be unworldly, but definitely do NOT get a full body massage from the younger asian guy. He was nice enough but it was such a waste of money.
