  • When I moved back to Toronto, I was looking for gyms in the Toronto core where I could swim or do water exercises, since after my back surgery this was pretty much the only thing I was cleared to do. The Toronto Athletic Club was the only option. I got in on an Intermediate Executive Membership (for those in their early 30s), but the cost was still steep $1000 initiation and $150/month (which has now gone up to $160). I also got lured into getting a trainer ($90/session) and a swim instructor ($50/session), since I embarrassingly don't know how to swim. Despite these high costs, I can honestly say that I am getting my money's worth at TAC. The trainers I have worked with, James and Tyrone, really know their stuff and aren't afraid to push you. Their expertise is in an area known as MAT (Muscle Activation Techniques) that has been yielding definite progress in terms of strengthening my core. My swim instructor, Laura, is very positive and has helped me make significant progress in the pool. I've even gotten into the Aquafit class run by Karina, which is thoroughly entertaining -- and admittedly a step back from the Tapout XT MMA workout that resulted in my herniated disc, but you gotta start somewhere, right? The workout area, while small, features gorgeous views of the CN Tower, surrounding buildings and lake. You can also see the CN Tower and witness a nice sunset from the pool. The gym is generally busy but not too busy. I also worried about whether I would bother walking the 15-20 minutes from St. Lawrence Market to the club, but then I re-discovered the joys of the PATH and only have to stay above ground for 5 minutes. :) I'm definitely glad that I joined.
