| - For the fun of spending the scorching Arizonian summer, the 4 of us carpooled to the Eastside for the casual "Adam-Richman-was-Here" experience. His image on the front glass wall casted no doubts that this was the place where he had loyally bitten through this legendary Del Rey Torta ($9.50)--the primary purpose of our eating venture that we made 2 orders (1 per couple) of these behemoths. Additionally, we were voracious & interested for the down-to-earth-looking Chilaquiles ($7) & Cocktel de Camaron Chico ($10.99), plus their Aguas Frescas Naturales ($3.50) deemed critically appropriate during Phoenix's triple digit inferno.
Speaking of heat, that unrefined watermelon drink lovingly quenched our parched mouths &, particularly, the not-at-all watery & un-syrupy consistency convinced us that it was from a legit melon--just a pinch of sweet to enliven it a little more. Meanwhile, the Chilaquiles--which (again) the arrangement of salsas & cheeses underneath the fried tortilla chips resembled the colors of the Mexican flag--proved very plentiful, &, from the SoCal's palate, turned out to be quite tasty, specifically their Cotija cheese & perfectly cooked eggs over easy. The Shrimp Cocktail may look, well, soupy, but there was an adequate, lime-tastic amount of these medium-sized, decent crustaceans for DL, Kurdy, Angela & me to munch w/ the quirkily addicting fried tortilla.
At last, we attempted to dethrone the Del Rey Torta, flamboyantly composed of ham, melted cheese, breaded beef, refried beans, hot dog meat, chorizo omelet, tomato, onion, avocado & (finally) chipotle sauce. Attempting to open at my widest, I managed to bite probably 3/4 of the stacked ingredients. Obviously flavor-wise, altogether did equate into candid yummy-ness, & the overall textures were pleasantly soft, tender, & thankfully not unctuous. However, if deconstructed (b/c we inadvertently let 1/2 of the torta spill on our plate), some individuals--like the beef & beans--were bluntly plain on their own. In other words, they truly need to be eaten in unison for a king-like, gluttonous feel. Plus, potato chips were served w/ these Sammies, but the reminiscence of plain old Ruffles left me only focused on the signature item. Of course you're wondering if we finished the Rey; I believe I annihilated half of that stack.
We finally ended our eats w/ the surprisingly enormous Chocoflan ($4.50), which I honestly didn't care for & gladly permitted DL to finish the rest of it =P. Service was certainly impressive even for the royals: very pleasant, accommodating, and attentive at their best. It may be a 3.5-starred feast, but if I am in the mood for that fruit-tastic potion (which comes w/ other fruits & horchata) & a torta, I'd positively come back--this time begging for the traditional or their saucy version called the Pambasos.
