  • Moving to Toronto from L.A. meant giving up the mecca of used music, Amoeba Hollywood. I am happy to report that in good Canadian fashion, Sonic Boom has been a smaller, less intense and almost equal substitute. I'd guess that close to 60% of my CD purchases have come from here since I immigrated. The location can't be beat, especially if you are headed over to the Bloor Cinema--it is almost too easy to pop in for quick browse of the new arrivals before your movie starts. The aisles are spacious, things are nicely organized, there is a huge selection and prices are fair. I think I can count once or twice the number of times I did not run into a CD, especially jazz, that I was looking for. And now their used DVD collection, especially for TV shows, is amazing. I have sold back a few DVDs--it was an easy process and I got as good an amount as I'd get anywhere. They won't buy back just anything but are nice in rejecting your unwanted junk :) No comment on this bags policy. Seems to make sense to me. Shoplifting is on the rise and there is no shortage of small things you could easily lift here--seems fair. Staff is friendly and made up of some of the hippest kids in town. Again, it is like Amoeba in this regard. My only concern is that there seems to be an ever increasing amount of non music being sold here: lots of novelty items, retro candy, etc. My guess is that fewer of us are buying physical media now and that this serves as a profit centre (and way to keep the doors open). Most highly recommended--one of my favourite places to drop cash in the city.
