  • Mike is an artisan. A rare craftsman who not only has mastered his profession, but also manages to find excitement and artistry in his work. My experience with mike starts with an unique pair of leather shoes I purchased at Goodwill for 3 dollars about two years ago. I used the solely(hehe) for swing dancing, and as such they saw plenty of use and abuse. The novel woven pattern of the leather kept me from polishing them and soon enough they began to show their age-- I knew it was time for a spa treatment. I began the hunt on Yelp and was astonished to find that Mr. Mike had racked up a litany of excellent reviews. I waited two weeks before I had the opportunity to make my way over to his shop in China Town. The interior of his shop smelled like a tangy hot sunrise. The odor of leather mingled with a soupçon of other smells of the trade: polish, rubber, glue. Then around the corner comes the smiling face of the eponymous Mike. He greets me and begins to peruse my shoes. He talks over my shoes like an archeologist might over some ancient bits of pottery, remarking on their originality and speculating on repairs. We settle on all leather soles (for dancing) and a polish. The cost is more than affordable for someone who paid a pittance for the shoes initially. I leave with a charming pictures of my shoes, held by Mike, before their transformation. A week later I returned to Mike's place of business buzzing with excitement as if it's Christmas morning. He pulls a bag from his shelf brimming with other completed projects and removes my shoes from the bag. They scintillate in the sunlight, glittering scales on some exotic koi fish pulled from some mythical pond in the heavens. I may be waxing a bit poetic at this point but the shoes looked phenomenal. Brand new even. Certainly better than when I got them. And the full Italian leather soles are a sight to behold. Like a teenager with a new car, I am itching to test drive these puppies on the dance floor! Thanks again, Mike. You'll be my go to cobbler until you close up shop.
