| - Date night with my lady brought us to one of our favorite sushi places on the Westside. Nestled in an unpretentious strip mall between Twain and Desert Inn on the west side of Durango, this restaurant is easy to get to and has lots of easy parking.
This was our 4th visit. I wouldn't have done a review except for the few notable issues we encountered that night. First of all, the fish (and other food items) are superb! Nuff' said. If you go, expect quality, firm sushi and fresh veggies, etc (the tempura is divine). The atmosphere is quite pleasant with lots of space between tables, a lovely decor, more than pleasant staff willing to go an extra kilometer or two, and even nondescript background music (an important feature for us as we concentrate on the dining experience).
We walked in sans reservations and were given a table post-haste by two very pleasant greeters.
Now the challenges: in almost all restaurants, food is either served in stages "coursed out" based on appetizers, mains, deserts, etc. ... unless one requests everything be brought out at the same time. One exception is the sushi house. Sushi places customarily take your list of items when you order, and reserve the right to bring you what they want ... when they want. The diner rarely gets to specify the order of items received. This is customary and gives the kitchen the option to juggle all the orders and keep most parties eating something most of the time. I'm not a fan however. I prefer to get ALL my sushi items together so I can decide WHAT I want to eat and WHEN I eat it. Alas Sen of Japan doesn't work that way, and I deal with it. On this night however, our items were widely spaced: we would get something, eat it, and have to wait 5-15 minutes for the next item. On one occasion, I waited almost 30 minutes for a particular nigiri order. I was not happy.
I had received my toro (fatty) salmon early, and because it's one of my fave's, I placed it aside as my "desert". I moved it away from my plate area while I waited for the rest of my order. Our server (who knowingly saw us waiting impatiently) came over and lifted my "desert" plate and moved it in front of me. I said, "Please leave that there." He apologized.
Nevertheless, despite the quality food, the dining experience that night was soured by the excessive waiting. Since we had dined there previously, I assume they were short-staffed and we will go back. However, it did cost them 1 star for this review.
