| - I found this more interesting, in many ways, than Casa Loma across the street. The tour is conducted by a docent, and the objects in the house are original to the Austin family who built it over the foundation of an early nineteenth century farmhouse. It is furnished as it would have been in the 1920's. Do not, however, expect a lot of art deco style - these people seemed to be extremely conservative in their tastes. The most interesting parts are the wall treatments (the wallpaper was reproduced from original samples), the chandeliers, and the Victorian plaster work. It gives a good feel for how a well-to-do Canadian family of old money would live.
The docent gave a very good tour that last over an hour, I think. He had lots of commentary on not only the objects in the house, but on social life at that time and the families history. In addition to the house, there is a beautiful formal garden also restored to the choice of plantings that might have been used 100 years ago.
You may take photos and use flash. (The house still has a dark Victorian look in many of its rooms so flash may be needed.) The upper floors are only partly restored but they do display a master bedroom, sitting rooms and a servants bedroom.
A decent introductory video is given before the tour. There is a small gift shop as well.
