  • Ladies: Take your birth control and vagina questions elsewhere First of all, I just want to say that the doctors here seem perfectly nice and capable - I have nothing against any of them. The clinic also seems nice and clean. However, the clinic's practises and policies have been incredibly enraging. Exhibit A: Refusing to prescribe me more than 3 months of birth control at a time. I have been on the same brand of birth control for EIGHT YEARS NOW, with no issues, and never have I had a doctor prescribe me less than a year at a time, especially considering that I've always been very on top of getting my paps and STI swabs done. I even got a blood test once because I'm paranoid. After my last pap here, I finally got my 3-years-all-clear, and they prescribed me three months worth of pills. I didn't notice until I got to the pharmacy. When I went back after about 10 weeks, I asked to get my full year, but the doctor said he couldn't do that. I literally begged for at least six months, but walked away with three. I told him straight-up that if he didn't prescribe me more than three months I would never be coming back to Oasis (for ANYTHING), and I fully intend to follow through on that promise. Exhibit B: Making me come in for a follow up appointment for no reason. Back in November I knew something was off (down there), but I didn't know what, so I went in to get tested. I got a phone call telling me my lab results were in, and that I needed to come in for a follow-up appointment the following day. I got to spend 30 hours panicking, and then waited an extra 45 minutes in their waiting room, only to be told in less than 30-seconds that everything looked good, I just had a minor yeast infection and needed to go buy Canesten. I didn't even get a prescription so I could get it covered, I just had to go to Safeway across the parking lot to pick some up. In contrast, when I tested positive for BV at my university clinic a couple years ago, they told me and explained the condition OVER THE PHONE, AND left me a prescription to pick up at the desk whenever I could make it back over there. Needless to say, I was unimpressed with how Oasis handled the situation (relieved, but seriously ticked off). In conclusion, I don't know how government funding for clinics works in Alberta, but my experiences at Oasis have led to me to believe that they must get some sort of payment every time you set foot in one of their doctor's offices, and they are determined to squeeze every dollar out of you that they can. From my point of view, this mentality completely ignores how inconvenient, sometimes stressful, and unnecessarily time-consuming this is for their patients. If I'm right, it's also a brutal abuse of our tax dollars. If I'm wrong on this, I would argue that they really don't have any good reason - it's pretty overzealous. If you're bored and have nothing better to do but sit in a waiting room for 20-45 minutes every 3 months or so, then this is the place for you! However, if you actually have places to go, people to see, and things to do, save yourself some time and skip this ridiculous establishment. Taryn Riley
