| - When the sign went up for Bagel World last summer, I felt like it couldn't open fast enough. I've had a terrible time finding bagels I liked within a reasonable distance from home. Tim's and the other coffee chains do an extreme disservice to the food called bagels, to the point where I refuse to engage with them on that level ever again. I thought Dunkin' Donuts screwed up bagels, then I moved to Toronto!
Anyway, Bagel World was suddenly open one day and I was excited. I went in with a coworker at lunch. I marveled at how nice the entryway and overall interior design looked. I also noticed on the way in that the patio out front is lovely, covered and also features huge patio heaters! Whoo! Although I can't be convinced that the patio will be a popular place in, say, February, I think there are plenty of times when the heater will get a good workout.
The lunch specials are up on the board, you get in a cafeteria-style line and select your own bagel from the baskets of different types. Then, if you want a bagel sandwich they will top it accordingly. Otherwise, you can just get butter or your choice of flavored cream cheeses, with an optional side of tomato or cucumber. On my first visit, I made the misstep of picking out a bagel the size of a bread plate, and then ordering soup on top of it AND a side of tomato. I thought it would be value for my money, as nothing on the menu at BW is exactly *free*.
The staff was friendly and while I dropped more than I would have dropped getting a bagel at Tim's, the price was worth it. The vegetable soup wasn't anything to write home to, and at around $5 per bowl I would say try a variety other than vegetable (I got the impression they rotate it regularly).
The next time I went I got one of the much-hyped "flat bagels" and no soup, and I enjoyed it much more, not only because I wasn't about to explode from carb consumption but also because it was a lot friendlier to my wallet. The flat bagels are still bagels, but there is a certain novelty to a 50-50 bagel to cream cheese ratio, if you dare. I like the everything, because their "everything" topping includes salt chunks from the salt bagels too. Deliciously saline without burning your mouth off like a regular salt bagel.
All in all, a nice treat but I wouldn't get it every day. Much preferable to even the slightly-less-terrible than Tim's options like Bagel Stop. Mazel tov!
