  • With the recent announcement of Altar Bar closing, and after just discovering them this year, I felt it was time to write a review for them. I discovered Altar Bar, but had known of its existence previously, earlier this year while attending a We The Kings concert. Followed shortly with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Eve 6. While it's true the acoustics of the building left a lot to be desired, the concert venue itself was wonderfully run. Security is always present, the bartenders are always fantastic, and I've even had the 'shot girl' in the basement offer to charge my phone for me when it was dead and dying (I left a few dollars in her tip jar in return of course). The layout of the venue is a little hard on the legs (especially after working the same day and standing on your feet). It requires you to walk down a flight of stairs (1 level) to use the restroom, or two flights if you want to go upstairs to the 21+ section (from the restroom). Add in a small bladder and you better not wear anything but flats and tennis shoes to anything here (tho with their typical shows being what they are, that's typically not a problem here). They do have some half booth diner style seating up against the walls in the upper half of the venue though. The bathroom is usually pretty clean, and they even have a ladies restroom attendant with lotions and perfumes available to use (albeit for a small charge). I've seen these ladies tip baskets rival the bartenders money on some nights! Go ladies go! I am deeply saddened that Altar Bar is closing. Where am I supposed to go now? The buses out to Millvale and Mr Smalls are few and far between and rarely running (so us public transit riders get the short end of the stick there). The Rex has little seating unless you manage to be one of the first to snag one of 4 barstools on the top balcony thingie (which is way way way too far away from the stage to even have a good viewpoint). Diesel you'll run into yuppies and college students who can't control their liquor. Ah Altar Bar. You will be missed. Please buy another location and open it as another concert venue. We need you :(
