| - Yesterday morning, I ran into the Fry's Supermarket at Hayden Peak Crossing to pick up a couple of things, knowing from experience that this store is almost always understaffed, which means that you can expect to waste a lot of time standing in line, whether at the meat counter, the deli, or, especially, the checkout lanes.
I raced to check out with my two items only to discover that the store had eliminated its express checkout lanes. Thus I had to stand in line, cooling my heels while the person ahead of me checked out a huge order. When I called the store manager to complain about this today he told me, with what I assume was a straight face, that they were trying to "improve customer service" by expanding the self-checkout lanes.
I will never, ever check out my own groceries, period. It's certainly not that I think I am above doing such a thing, but I recognize this effort on the part of the store for exactly what it is--a despicable attempt to eliminate the jobs of the people staffing the checkout lanes by encouraging customers to wait on themselves. I refuse to be complicit in this attempt and would insist that if Fry's actually cared about people and about customer service they would be hiring more staff rather than attempting to eliminate some of the staff they already have. Shame on them.
