| - 3 stars for the childhood memory of stopping here for a night en route home from a four-day road trip with my dad and brother when my innocent virgin eyes saw Vegas for the first time. All the flashy lights, cigarette smoke, alcohol, raucous, and funky smells of the casino can be intimidating for a kid and I remember wishing we'd stayed at Days Inn, where it was quiet, more manageable, and more holy. This was the city my mother warned me about, where alcoholics and hookers ran rampant in the streets and fathers gambled away their mortgages, and I wasn't about to have any part of it. I had stuffed animals back home that needed me. But then I finally loosened up and mustered up the courage to venture out of the hotel room and gamble away my college trust fund while I sipped on a vodka cranberry.
Ok maybe not.
But I did sip on some apple juice and played skee ball until my ten bucks ran dry. I scored a yellow M&M doll and a blue monkey that night and it was the proudest moment of my life. =) Then I got REALLY brave and snuck into the slot machine area with my bro (who was 18 at the time, before they increased the minimum gambling age to 21) and witnessed him hit the jackpot and return home with a large souvenir cup full of quarters (this is when Vegas slots discharged actual coins instead of vouchers). Wow, what a rush! I thought we were high rollers!! Even though I'd probably never consider booking a room here as an adult, Circus Circus was the perfect child's introduction to the City of Sin and for that I would recommend it to any visitors bringing the little ones along.
