| - Two Stars for: "Meh, I've experienced better." Some people are impressed and gush about the moderne style architecture. Let me tell you, this style will be passe' in 2 years. Sorry! So it has glass elevators? So do malls. The "art" there is of the Marxist type: shapeless, meaningless forms- ugly & progressive.
The library left me with a bad taste in my mouth and here's why: on my very first day to the library and applying for my card, I inadvertently lost one of my new library cards. I was told by staff not 5 mins. ago to alert them if I lose my card. You are given one credit card size wallet card, and a smaller one to fit on your keychain. I was wandering around looking at books after I put the wallet library card in my wallet, got my books and left. I wasn't aware of it at the time but left my keychain card there in the library. I found out later when on their site, there were DVDs and CDs that had been checked out. I know I didn't rent any media. Oh no...
I alert library, I walk in and meet with totally indifferent staff. I was told the media was checked out from Burton Barr, the library I was in. Turns out they were checked out using my card at another library in a city I have never even driven through. I spoke with their security. He shrugged, says since the items were checked out using a valid card then there really isn't anything they can do.
I call the local police station to ask if I can make a report. I still am not done with this issue...
This is NOT the libraries fault.. or *is* it? What is wrong with checking out books the old fashioned way! WHY oh WHY must you use those automated self checkouts? Those are atrocious. There were staff just sitting there, staring at their computers seemingly very bored and probably disgusted by looking at bums all day.
I felt dirty in that place. So many homeless, but not "cool" homeless: BAD homeless. The kind of people that use other people's library cards.
Lots of concrete and steel, lots of neon--no humanity.
