| - The Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas is indeed one of the finest hotels I have had the chance to stay in. It's posh, elegant and just precious enough to make even the most common of us feel like an A-list celebrity.
From the 28th floor lobby with its polished marble and even polished-er staff, to the very civilized fact that they don't have a casino, which means no smoking ANYWHERE on the premises.
Their Sky Bar offers a cocktail list fitting to the luxurious surroundings as well as widow seats with views of the city that leaves one breathless, particularly at night.
The hallways are done in black marble and red and black carpeting reflecting the decor of 1920's Shanghai. All the common areas are delightfully scented with mandarin orange...of course!! I find scented establishments sometimes cloying, but this wasn't too heavy.
Our standard room was inaccurately monikered, as though regular in size, the decor and attention to detail and extras was way above standard: plush king sized bed with a mountain of downy pillows and even downier duvet! A desk and chair, with a chaise-longue and coffee table. The entire rooms electronics, lighting, curtains and TV were all operated by a touchpad that was next to the bed. Not an iPad mind you. This was about 5 pounds and a little more PC than MAC in its user friendliness, but still fun to play with.
A huge bathroom with a soaker tub and separate glassed in shower. His and her sinks and a cute TV hidden in the mirror. The toilet was privately separate from the rest of this spa-like room with a tastefully frosted glass door.
There was also a nice separate foyer area with plenty do closet and storage including a valet cupboard which allowed access from the hallway in which one could place ones shoes and have them magically return polished in a few hours at the push of a button; free of charge of course.
The room service menu was wonderful, and we enjoyed hot and scrumptious breakfasts delivered in a rolling hot box which doubled as a dining table beautifully laid with linens and all the little trappings of a nice in room meal: the little jams, mini ketchups and baby Tabasco bottles; our suitcases rannethed over with take home goodies! We had gourmet jam for our own weekend breakfasts in bed for weeks!
We opted to spoil ourselves with their Spa pedicures. BEST PEDICURE EXPERIENCE EVER HANDS DOWN!!! Hot eye covers, jasmine tea, full leg massage...an hour of bliss. Not to mention the all day access to the spa's bathing area which can only be described as Aqua Nirvana.
There was aromatic and dim led-lit steam rooms with gentle music playing. Soaker jacuzzi beds overlooking the stunning view of the city and mountains. Rain shower experiences that combine different water sprays, jets and steams with sounds to recreate jungles, rain forests and other delights. Dry stone saunas. Even a relaxation room with fresh teas and apples and comfy beds on which to recline while awaiting a treatment. The whole area was dutifully attended by 2 Filipino gents who were attentive to every need: bottled water, towels, toiletries, anything one might require.
The outdoor pool area had 2 long heated pools as well as 2 hot tubs which were only lightly populated as it was Thanksgiving and a tad chilly outside.
At the poolside cafe we enjoyed a wonderful Caesar salad and a fresh roll from their sushi bar.
This hotel is located at the south end of the Strip and only a quick walk over to MGM Grand if one is in the mood to hit a casino.
In all, I highly recommend this hotel on many levels. It is however expensive, but if you keep an eye out they do offer specials and upgrades so check their website.
Mandarin Oriental, thank you for the memories, and I hope soon to be entwined in your elegant environs again some day...sigh...
