  • I like Freedom. No, I love love LOVE Freedom! Nothing is quite as nice as a trip to this park. It's older and shows it in some regards, but like fine wine it gets better with age. This is what I would call Charlotte's "Central Park" and it has all the amenities to boot: Baseball fields including batting cages, a large playground with a Panther "Jr. Training Course," Tennis, Basketball, and Volleyball courts, plenty of shelters, and an amphitheater in the middle of the lake. They have a large indoor pavilion that you can rent from the city for events and activities. The amphitheater is also a frequent spot for small concerts and recitals. The seating area in front of the amphitheater is a multi-graded lawn that tiers upward, providing maximum capacity for people with lawn chairs or picnic blankets. Another great feature of this park is the fact that it's a part of the Sugar Creek Greenway. Starting from underneath East Blvd, it enters the park from the side of its main entrance. From there you can either continue on the Greenway from the trail or detour through the park. On the other side of the lake you can stay on the Greenway via Princeton Ave. and follow signs through the neighborhood. It's a cool yet lengthy way to get to the Park Road Shopping Center. Make sure you plan your walk if you're going to trek this far. I've only been once but there is a nature preserve that from what I can tell partners with Discovery place a lot as there's always demonstrations and community activities going on here. It's a great attraction if you have young kids who show curiosity in science and nature. The only downsides are of no fault of the park. Some people feel they are too pompous to pick up their own animal's waste. The city is undergoing a big program to increase awareness on the dangers of pet waste but I feel like the people who do this will not care in the slightest. Minor graffiti issues pop up from time to time but fortunately this park is well staffed which deters this as much as possible. Be sure to observe the many monuments that line the front of the park, honoring the servicemen of WWII and especially those from the QC. There are dedicated monuments for D-Day, CBI, and the Marine Corps. Going on nearly 70 years and it's livelier than ever. Freedom park is what every park should be in a (near) perfect world. Relaxation comes so easy here.
