| - My dachshund's eye suddenly turned red one day. I waited a few days to see if it would get better, but it didn't. My friend told me that her previous dog had cherry eye and that looking at my dog, she said it looked like that is what my dog had. I did some research on the Internet on cherry eye and found that surgery is the most effective way to treat it; however, my research also said that if it is caught early, steroid eye drops may help with getting rid of the cherry eye, but it is usually rare. Anyways, knowing that my dachshund most likely had cherry eye and that steroid eye drops may help with the problem if applied as soon as possible, I called Banfield Pet Hospital at MetroCenter to see if I could get him in as soon as possible. They had no appointments that day, but said I could come in and drop him off and the vet would examine him when there was a break in appointments. I brought him in at 9:00 am and they said I could leave and that they would call me after the vet examined him. I thought it would only be a couple of hours, but by 3:00 pm, I still had not received any phone calls from Banfield, I called them to see what was going on with my dog. The receptionist said that the tech had been trying to get ahold of me for a half hour or so with no luck. I asked what phone number they called and she quoted my cell phone number. I thought that was strange because I had my cell phone with me the whole day and I had not received any phone calls from Banfield and my phone did not have any missed calls from them either. I asked if they knew what was wrong with my dog's eye and she said the vet wanted to do a couple of tests first before they told me anything. I asked if it was cherry eye and the receptionist said she could not tell me that for sure until the vet did the test which would cost about $71. I told her that I would just come pick up my dog and she said that something needed to be done to my dog's eye and that she would have the nurse call me in about 15 minutes when she came back from her break. I waited for almost 1 hr and had not received a phone call from the nurse so I called to see what was going on. The nurse said that my dog did have cherry eye, but the vet would need to do a couple of test before she prescribed the eye drops for him. The tests, the steroid eye drops and saline type eye drops would cost me $125. The steroid eye drops alone cost $40. I asked for the name of the eye drops and said I would see if I could get them cheaper at a pharmacy like Walgreens or CVS. (I found Walgreens charged about $30 and CVS charged $11.99.) I went to Banfield to pick up my dog, and found that they had already done the test even though I had not specifically authorized it yet. I paid the $71 for the test and I received the prescription for the steroid eye drops. The other saline eye drops that they wanted to charge an arm and leg for cost me $2.50 at drug store. I have a follow up appointment scheduled for 10 days for the vet to see how his eye is doing. So far, I do not see that the eye drops have done anything to make my dog's eyes better so I am almost sure he will need surgery. However, I am thinking of going to a private vet for the follow up instead of going back to Banfield for several reasons: 1. the fact that the Banfield receptionist told me they tried to call me, but I know they didn't because my cell phone showed no missing calls, 2. the receptionist told me the nurse would call me back in about 15 minutes but I never received the phone call from nurse,3. the length of time my dog spent at Banfield Pet Hospital before I picked him up, 4. The vet went ahead and did the tests without me really authoring it. 5. and lastly, i never was offered a chance to talk or meet the vet that examined my dog.
