| - Having grown up in the greater Pittsburgh area, I've always been a big fan of Kennywood Park, but it wasn't until I moved far away and visited other parks that I realized what a treasure this place really is. I took for granted some of the features that I now realize set Kennywood apart from other amusement parks. Even though I now live 2,500 miles away, an annual visit to Kennywood is still a highlight of my summer.
Kennywood has found an ideal balance between preserving uncommon historic rides while also adding new thrill rides over the years. I love the fast and upside-down thrill rides, but I also love the character and history of older rides, and I especially love their small collection of old and new roller coasters.
Kennywood is also a beautiful park, especially at night. Visiting some other parks at night was a bit of a disappointment, when I realized not every park covers their rides in so many flashing lights. Apparently it's optional, and Kennywood opts for pizzazz. Another reality check came when visiting the carousels of other parks, which weren't nearly as ornate as Kennywood's, and played recorded music (gasp!). I now have great appreciation for the care (and cost) that Kennywood puts into maintaining its gorgeous carousel and the vintage band organ that provides its music.
When it comes to the cost of a visit and the value you get, Kennywood beats the big chain parks. Admission and the cost of food inside the park are both reasonable. At Magic Mountain near LA, I spent a shocking $20 for a serving of chicken fingers and a drink, compared to the $40 I spent *all day* on lunch, dinner, snacks and drinks at Kennywood when I visited again last summer.
If you're in Pittsburgh looking for a great way to spend a summer day, your best bet is Kennywood Park, where you'll get the quintessential amusement park experience.
