| - We had a very disheartening experience with Mayo Arrowhead - their quality of service is so far below the typical Dr (way below the typical Mayo specialist). The office (nurses) had a lot of excuses for why the office did the substandard care - none of them that were valid (e.g. patient didn't say they had symptoms, yes patient clearly did!!).
Since DH sees a Mayo specialist, we thought going to Mayo Arrowhead might be a good choice for a primary Dr, all information in one system.
We made an appointment, the Drs bio seemed good - Dr Pullins worked with chronic issues and preventative medicine and Geriatrics (since we are getting older).
The visit seemed ok, a student Dr came in with Dr Pullins. We said why we were there (changing Drs and wanted a full physical including full labs, specifically mentioning liver and kidney) as well as a knee acting up. The student Dr took over, asked a bunch of questions. I mentioned you should have old labs (given to Mayo a couple years ago). He did check the knee out.
After a brief consult outside the room (a couple minutes at most), Dr Pullins came in with the student Dr. He checked the knee then said I will order the labs and asked if we had medicine refills (we did). Visit done, knee referral done, referred to warfarin clinic as Drs don't do that at mayo.
DH has high blood pressure, high cholesterol (told and well documented with Mayo), takes testosterone, takes an iron supplement prescribed by a liver specialist (not discussed but on their records), and we said he currently had high fasting blood sugar (also shown in previous mayo labs). We stressed we wanted the full physical because it had not been done for years and changes had happened in that time so we wanted to check current values.
The labs done were not even the bare minimum. It didn't include most of the labs all the major organizations (including national institute of health - the gold standard) said someone over 60 should have as preventative medicine.
No kidney tests, no liver tests (despite high test results in the past), no blood sugar/insulin/ac1 test, no thyroid tests. Only basic cholesterol (no small particle which is very valuable and was high before). No CRP-reactive.
The worst part came when I called back saying hey, we didn't get a full labs done for the physical.
First a nurse called me, she looked up the labs ordered and I said what wasn't done and she repeatedly said I don't know that test and/or nobody asks for it (thyroid? - you gotta be kidding).
There were issues if the insurance would pay for a second lipid test (I called, should be no problem but mayo hadn't billed it roughly 2 weeks later so she could not tell for sure).
More talks with the same nurse again, I started reading all the tests that were previously tested high and she was asking well what is that one, I don't know what to mark down.
I got frustrated and said why am I guessing what tests are needed, a Dr should be making these decisions. Please have Dr Pullins give me a call.
Two days later the head nurse called and when I said full labs for a physical were not done, she started giving excuse after excuse (not saying the Dr has ordered them). Excuses were:
-- Labs cost money and not all insurance covers them so we don't run them. WTF - no discussion of this with the patient, our insurance covers them!!! Maybe we need to get them done at some place less expensive than Mayo if Mayo charges tons more than other places.
-- Labs are done only when someone says they have symptoms. Well why didn't they do glucose/insulin/ac1 when symptoms were reported? Glucose is ALWAYS tested and for someone older Insulin should ALWAYS be tested, symptoms can be silent which is why there is so much undiagnosed diabetes.
-- We just don't do that, standard of care changes all the time. So why are you not doing what NIH prescribes - which by the ways says NOT to do PSA testing, too many false positives and the followup is a biopsy that has a very high percentage of causing ED & Incontinence, so why are they doing PSA without asking us?
No offers ever made about well looking at things your DH should have these tests. No saying would be happy to offer choices (e.g. go to another lab to get cheaper tests, see these specialists to get the tests, etc.).
I again asked for the Dr to return my call - he might, he might not call me (he is busy, obviously too busy to give us than 5 minutes of care or do basic standard care levels).
Go find better Drs. These guys might be ok if you have a cold (tell you go home and get some rest and drink fluids), but not for anything else (I would not trust them to figure out the cold was really bronchitis or strep or pneumonia).
