| - This is a review of the facility on Greenway in Surprise. My biggest complaint is that the equipment isn't maintained well. The cracks in the padding (which one expects to be worn from time to time, with constant use) is the least of the problems. On an upper body machine, one of the 5-pound plates was stuck on the main weight column for weeks and because it was too much weight for me to handle, I wasn't able to use the machine. Some of the expandable coils holding the pins in place have come loose--not a big issue, but worth noting because it indicates a lack of care.
The most annoying equipment malfunction is the treadmills. Thankfully, there are plenty of them, so I usually find one that's available--but too often, either a treadmill has a sign stating that it's inoperable, or the running platform is slightly buckled and has a weird sensation and loud grinding noise when I'm running on it, as though the motor is about to give way. And almost NONE of the heart rate indicators on the treadmills work! How can management let this most important feature of a treadmill continue to be broken? Recently, when I asked one of the staff why the heart rate indicators weren't working, he responded with a smirk, "Oh, they haven't been working for about five years"--as though that were an excuse or valid explanation! Why should I expect the equipment to be regularly maintained, I'm only paying membership dues.
On the positive side, when the music is too loud--which it is almost always, as I can hear it THROUGH MY HEADPHONES--the staff has always turned it down a little. Though I'd rather not have to ask.
To conclude, I thank many of the other reviewers for the heads up on how difficult it has been for them to get their memberships cancelled when they leave the gym. The greed of the owners/managers appears compatible with the lack of equipment maintenance.
