| - Call me a purist, but Thai ice cream is not really something I care about. I don't need "gimmicks" with my ice cream, but will try it in any form, nonetheless. This place is in the neighborhood, though and my kid convinced us to finally check it out just yesterday. Unfortunately, our experience left a lot to be desired.
We walked in to two or three people waiting for their orders, so it was NOT crowded at all. Despite this, my son and I walked up to the counter, where two of the most miserable employees I've ever seen were preparing ice cream, and neither found it worth their time to greet us at all. Not a "Welcome to Zero Below," nor a "hi" or even just a smile. No eye contact, even! We stood there being avoided for a full five minutes before one of the girls finally finished the order she was working on and walked up to us and even then, she did so silently, expecting me to just start telling her what we wanted. I've never even received service like that at McDonald's!
Look, I know that food service work can be tough and we all have off days for whatever reason, but the manager here really needs to get their employee's act in gear. Whatever the reason might be that they are so miserable, something needs to change. Even in the years I worked retail, which can be equally as difficult, I never ignored a customer like that!
Sadly, when we received our order, I found the mango ice cream almost totally flavorless. My kid enjoyed it, but he's a garbage disposal without a discerning palette, so that should tell you something. These ice cream rolls had just the slightest hint of mango flavor and were not really sweet. While the portion was large, the blandness made it totally unappealing to me.
We're seriously lacking actual ice cream spots in the Heights (not froyo), so I was really hopeful for Zero Below. The poorly executed ice cream and employee issues have assured that I won't be back, though. This could have been the beginning a beautiful relationship, as I do love ice cream. What a shame!
