  • Ever since a friend introduced me to this bakery about two years ago it has become my go-to place for bread. Silverstein makes various kinds of loaves - rye, whole wheat, multi-grain, marble, egg - and then there are buns / rolls of various types. You can also customise large orders. I've tried all their products but my favourite is the rye bread, costing $3.10 for a loaf (I'll post the weight later) which I think is quite affordable. The bread comes straight out of their oven racks and you can ask it to be sliced thin, medium or thick. For an optimal bread to topping/condiment ratio (for sandwiches), I always get medium slices. Their factory is located on McCaul street between College and Dundas on the east side and that's where you buy bread from; fresh from the factory, no middlemen. There are no signs, so enter through the large orange door and turn left. The workers are friendly and if they see you linger around for a while near the cash register, someone will come and help you. So fresh and real is their bread that if you leave it on your counter for few days it will catch mould. This is quite the opposite of grocery store-bought breads which will last for a much longer time. So this is what I do - buy a loaf and freeze half of it. I don't remember buying bread at a grocery store in the past two years (ok, maybe a couple of instances) and I am quite happy to keep it that way.
