  • I've been coming here for the better part of a decade now and have been lucky enough to see shows like The Producers, Phantom of the Opera, BLAST!, and now this past weekend WICKED. One of the most important details when reviewing a venue is the quality of shows that the venue brings in. And let's face it, even as a U of A alum, I will admit that ASU Gammage brings in some of the best shows in the state. I've sat front row for a performance only a handful of times in my life: 1) Lebron James vs. The Suns, 2) Phillies vs. Nats game, 3) Wicked. And let's just say Wicked and Lebron James are currently tied for best front show performance I've been too. Here's a tip....I know many of the Wicked shows are sold out, but they DO have a lottery 2.5 hours before game time. I went to the box office at 5pm for a 730pm show, put my name in the lottery outside of the box office, and at 5:30pm they do the drawing. They drew my name and I got two FRONT ROW tickets for $25 each...yeah seriously, killer deal. These tickets were going for $250 on craigslist. Yeah, you do have to put some time into it, I went on 3 different occasions before I won, but it was a memorable experience. Gammage is structurally beautiful. What they lack is bathrooms. There is only one men's bathroom in the whole place (I was told this by an usher), so the only time I have actually had to wait in line to use the bathroom has been at Gammage. And the women's line for the bathroom was even worse. When the bells rang for the conclusion of intermission, there were seriously about 75-100 women still waiting to use the bathroom. Food is pretty decent at the stands - $8 for a Turkey croissant sandwich, $5 for cinamon roasted almonds, $2 chips....pretty decent prices. Seating - I thought it was comfortable, but then again - I was too busy enjoying the show to adequately critique the comfy-ness. Parking - I'm not even going to complain about this. I found parking within 2 minutes of arriving and I was out of the parking lot within 8 minutes after the show...and all of this considering it was a sold out Saturday show. Even if it took me 15 minutes to get out, I wouldn't complain. Sure did I almost get rear-ended by a hummer? Yeah, but you know if you're in Arizona, your chances of being hit by a hummer are pretty dead even if you're in a parking lot or on the road. All in all, gammage is one of the best, if not the best place in the Phoenix area to catch a musical.
