I knew a former Wal-mart employee who assisted in setting up this store and I think I have some insight on why it is the way it is.
I was told this store is actually a Prototype of Wal-mart's, it's one of very few like it. It's kind of a Wal-mart Convenience Store, carrying only select "necessities" and some food. I believe they also take in inventory from other Wal-mart's that hasn't been selling. So that is why their selection is not the same as the other full-size Wal-marts. At least this is what I've been told...
I personally love the store, it is close to home and I can ride my bike or walk there for a last minute item if need be. Walking there with my kids, shopping and walking back can be quite an adventure sometimes, too.
If you shop there enough, you will soon learn what you can and can't find at this Wal-mart. There's also plenty of surprises and random stuff in the Clearance aisles in the front of the store. Plus, it is conveniently located next to the 99Cent Only store, Fry's, Tempe Public Library, Big 5 Sporting Goods and CVS.
