| - The Imperial Pub (especially the upstairs library) is the definition of a Dive Bar that's cool. When one ascends the staircase, you'll find a lovely hodgepodge of old and new couches, mis-matched chairs, cheesy decorations, and a pool table. The couches remind you of the one you picked up from the curb back in university: kind of ugly, but really comfortable. The upstairs is heated by an actual wood-burning stove...that's a touch a really like. Although before I realized it was a wood-burning stove, my Spider Senses made me rather nervous when I smelled smoke.
They have a decent selection of beers upstairs, with some interesting things in the bottle. They have some even more interesting taps downstairs (like St. Ambroise oatmeal stout when I was there). The bar staff and wait staff were really accommodating and friendly with our large group. Oh, and the beer is really pretty cheap by the pitcher.
For food, well we pretty much all had the poutine. My Quebecois friend swears this is the best poutine in Toronto, and I thought it was pretty damn good. It had a really nice gravy with a healthy serving of disgusting cheese curds and nice fries. In this case disgusting cheese curds is a compliment. I was utterly stuffed by my order of poutine which made for a very cheap (and unhealthy) dinner. They will add jalapenos on request too which was a choice I both enjoyed and regretted.
Fun place to go after work. Good beer, atmosphere (I'm not sure what kind, but at least it has it), tasty poutine (hon, hon, hon), and nice prices. I'll be back.
