| - I really want to like the Green Beanery. I am always in and around the Annex when I come back to visit Toronto each year and having a cafe in the neighbourhood that isn't Starbucks or Second Cup is nice. The location is fantastic and I love the large, open, airy space with lots of windows for watching the city go by. I also really appreciate the ample seating, seeing as many coffee shops fill up frustratingly quickly leaving no tables at which to sit and enjoy your coffee or even do a bit of work. But my most recent visit will probably be my last.
Despite the seating and atmosphere, this cafe is pretty sub-standard. First of all, there is no wifi - now, I can appreciate that some places choose not to provide free wifi for a multitude of reasons, but if you're running a cafe with such a large space with so many tables, you're bound to attract folks looking to settle and get some work done. At least I was, but after paying for my coffee and sitting down, I asked if there was wifi available and was told there wasn't any. Slightly annoyed, I sat there sipping my disappointingly weak and flavourless coffee, waiting to leave so I could actually get some work done elsewhere. Also, the service is pretty bad. I stood at the cash for too long waiting for one of the 4-5 staff members to finally come up and ask me what I wanted, and her reaction to my order made me feel like I was either inconveniencing her or that my boring order of straight drip coffee was too beneath her to show any real enthusiasm.
It sucks, but I'd much rather spend my time and money somewhere else.
