Recently, I did the unthinkable... I gave up meat, seafood and dairy. Well, mostly. As a someone who is new to plant-based living, I still struggle at a lot of restaurants. I do tend to cheat every now and then when I go out with buddies. Having been to Pinky's before and loved the burgers that I had, I was a little bummed to go back today... expecting their only vegan option to be a pretty bland salad. I quickly noted very many vegetarian options and thought that I would have to settle for the vegetarian burger until I saw a note that said "ask server about vegan options." I was impressed to hear that they provide Beyond Burgers on any of their dishes and they recently began providing a vegan pimento cheese. I was stoked that #1 the waitress took the time to explain the options and #2 that I could enjoy more of the fun meals I enjoyed without having to make too many exceptions. Even though I prefer to avoid fake meats since they don't usually taste good and the idea behind going plant-based is to avoid most processed foods... this burger was delish. I ended up with the White Trash Burger without cheese or mayo and added the vegan pimento. I was in heaven. I don't really care if a patty tastes like "the real thing" or not because I don't think vegetables should be expected to taste like meat. BUT... for those who do care, the Beyond Burger patty is the closest thing to meat that I have eaten in plant-based burger form. Texture. Flavor. Color. Amen. And the pimento cheese was just an added bonus thrown on top of this delicious burger. I can't fault any restaurant for not having too many vegan options. After all, this was my personal choice and vegan supplies are ex-pen-sive. However, it was a great treat to go out to lunch with buds and indulge this afternoon.
