| - We will travel many miles to go to a good restaurant - including an overnight trip to Tucson or a weekend in Santa Fe.
We have been meaning to try the TBG, but due to very inconsistent reviews, we had put it off.
"Inconsistent" defines our experience at TBG this week.
Worthy of 5 stars:
The location, decor, view, and ambiance.
Our server was also attentive and friendly.
Our drinks were great also.
Atmosphere: We were lucky enough to sit on the patio at dusk. The golf course/mountain/saguaro view was stunning. A small herd of javelina even ambled their way across the course.
Worthy of 2 stars:
Menu: I thought it was fairly boring from the beginning. No signature dishes or anything very unique. It would have made sense to have something Southwestern.
Because of the golf course, I do understand the need for more casual sandwich offerings, however.
We each had a cup of corn chowder - something I love. It was served sloppily with a puddle of soup under the bowl and I could clearly see where someone had attempted to wipe soup off the saucer (a smear the width of a finger).
The soup was average - very little corn, potatoes in large chunks too big for a cup of soup, and it could have used more flavor. (Some roasted poblano).
I had the Tumbleweed salad with chicken. Just an average salad. Even the dressing wasn't that great.
My husband had the Root Beer braised Short Ribs.
We both felt the reduced flavor of the root beer was just too distractingly sweet. (Have no clue why they would then choose sweet potatoes as an accompaniment).
In summary, we really wanted to love this place and again admired the setting as we left. We agreed that if we ever come back - it would be just for drinks, appetizer, and to enjoy the patio.
They really need to up their game on the food!
