For years I've been able to get free tickets to Divas, but I never had the desire to see it. Yesterday I had a family member in town who wanted to see the show, so I decided to come along.
Frank Marino starts the show as Joan Rivers and does a highly dated stand up comedy routine. For example, Marino did a joke revolving around him taking a flight on Hooters Air that week. Wikipedia tells me that Hooters Air ceased operations in April 2006, so it's a joke that's 11 years past its shelf life. That was the most egregious example that I could remember, but there were many more dated jokes that made me roll my eyes. There were some funny jokes too, but nothing that made me laugh out loud.
I figured that since many of the impersonations were of singers, that the cast would also sing. Nope, it's all lip syncing. Disappointing. Most of the cast did look like the person they were impersonating and did a good job of mimicking individual mannerisms. The costumes for the whole cast were impressive.
I wouldn't pay to see this show, but I'm glad I got to see it once so I can at least say I've seen it after living in Vegas all these years.
