Once bitten twice shy.
I was burnt by the Phoenix Food Truck Coalition before for advertising a food truck that ended up in a no show, looking at you Bang Bang. I threw caution to the wind and decided to venture out again when I saw Bang Bang Dumpling would be in midtown Phoenix. I only have a precious 30 minutes for lunch so time was of the essence.
I arrived, food truck was there. However, I was disappointed that they were not serving dumplings that day. So I went with the pork bao (char sui bao) aka pork buns and a second entree of teriyaki meatballs. Rather pricey for what I got. The pork bao was served with edamame and the teriyaki was over rice with pineapple slices. One of the pineapple slices hit the ground in my hurry back to the office. Casualty of war. Anyway, arrived at my office in time and ate at my desk. Luckily it was all still warm.
Pork bao was made from scratch which I was happy about. Great care was taken in the plating which I thought was excessive because folks are in a hurry at lunch time. The meatballs were tasty. Rice was quality and cooked just right. Overall it was very good and fresh. However, I think their simplicity kind of hurts them and then there's an over reliance on Hoisin or other sauces to make up for the gap in flavor. I'll try them again, only because I have a personal quest for the perfect dumpling.
