  • My review is regarding an evening summer concert; specifically Dilated Peoples/J5 on July 17th. Let me preface this by saying that I haven't been to a hip hop show in a very, very, VERY long time. Most of issues with these shows have to do with how cramped things can get, shitty attitudes from overly aggressive attendees, and not being able to see a damn thing (GA seating is unkind to those who are 5' 2"). With that said, this venue seemed to present itself as the beacon of hope for what can be. The Boulevard Pool was very easy to access. Those going straight to a show should park in the East Tower (or stay in the West Tower and make my life easier). Sidenote: It's perfectly located on the third floor near all the restaurants that have Happy Hour on weeknights, making for perfect pre-show festivities. The venue is on the third floor just past the restaurants. It was very quick and easy to get through security and I was surprised to find the stage practically in front of me when I got in. That's the first counter to my issues: elevated stage. I remember thinking, "wow, I'm watching live UNDERGROUND hip hop on a ROOFTOP." There was a wonderful breeze going through so it never felt stuffy or cramped. What was cool was the the pool area remained partially opened for use. I don't know if the prior lent to the crowd but the audience was great; positive, upbeat, and energetic despite it being a weeknight. Now, getting out of the venue is another story. The parking lot was quickly backed up and almost stalled but the staff worked quickly to direct traffic. I love the venue and look forward to attending more shows!
