| - I debated between a three or four-star review, but when thinking about if I would be a regular if I lived in Madison, I had to go with three. It's not because of anything specific, just think there is way better beer and ambiance a elsewhere.
The bartender was super friendly and helpful, made great recommendations, and was willing to keep my water filled for the entire time I sat at the bar reading a book. In addition, he was more than happy to offer my plenty of samples while I decided which beer I wanted. He was that perfect balance of chatty and quiet that is hard to master. But the best bartender in the world doesn't help if the beer is just mediocre.
The food and ambiance were both decent. He recommended the special of the day, a meatball sub, which had delicious meatballs but wasn't as good as it could have been. The ranch dressing for the veggies is very thin and watery, so I was definitely glad it wasn't on a salad.
It also just seems kind of weird (though I know it's not their fault), that a place named after a dog doesn't allow dogs on their patio.
In other words, I wouldn't actively avoid going to Great Dane, but I might not seek it out either.
