| - My boyfriend and I spent two nights at the Speckled Hen Inn for his birthday weekend. My brother and his wife recommended the Inn to us after they got engaged there in 2007 and had a wonderful experience despite a massive snowstorm! I decided to schedule a visit for my boyfriend and I in hopes of having a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle, but close enough to explore Madison. Booking the reservation was very easy, and Pat was helpful in assisting me pick a room. We arrived in the evening, and Bob was there to greet us and show us around. We stayed in the Starkweather Creek room on the second floor. The view over the entire pasture was beautiful, and my boyfriend and I (both animal lovers) spent quite some time watching the sheep and llama graze while drinking coffee. On our first day we walked to the barn and watched the hens eat their breakfast, and got to see the sheep and llamas up close.
The Inn is very clean and well-kept. Our room was spacious with a huge king-sized bed. The sheets....oh my goodness...these were the softest sheets I've ever felt! I can only hope they didn't turn me into a sheet snob. Everything was very clean and fresh, much more so than at most 4 star hotels. You can tell that Bob and Pat take pride in their home and their business, as it felt like we were staying in a good friend's home. The Starkweather Creek guestroom has huge bathroom with a two-person jetted tub, complimentary bath salts, and a dual-head shower, all of which we had to take advantage of!
The Gathering Room, which is actually where most guests enter the Inn, is stocked with fresh made snacks (cookies, pretzels, sodas, water) as well as coffee and tea. We enjoyed the complimentary snacks and beverages, as well as the board games and books about things to do in Madison, and the history of Chickens.
Breakfast was simply outstanding; three, filling courses, farm fresh ingredients, and endless coffee. We are vegetarian and Pat was happy to cater to our dietary wishes. Bob was around during our meals and told stories about the farm and how the Inn came to be.
This was our first B&B stay and I honestly can't think of anything that wasn't great! The Inn is quiet and unless you see someone in passing on the way to your room, you'd barely know anyone else is there. Bob and Pat are very accommodating and helpful if you are new to Madison and looking for things to do.
I highly recommend the Speckled Hen Inn. Whether you are in Madison for business, or looking for a romantic getaway with your loved one, staying at the Speckled Hen is relaxing and worry free - truly a home away from home.
