  • Terrible experience. In June I got a reminder phone call from the Charlotte speedway for an invite with a special deal for me. I needed a couple weeks to confirm I could go. I worked it out to be able to go in July. I booked my flight and car on Expedia and bought my race tickets on July 7th. I have been looking forward to this trip for 3 months. I flew into Charlotte Douglas airport for the race weekend at the Charlotte Motor Speedway from Miami on 10/6. This was the first race weekend I have planned all year. Normally I get to 8-10 NASCAR cup races a year so this was special to be able to go this time plus it's the last time the race will be held in this format. It was to be a memorable experience all around, now it has become a cautious tale. The reason that it is a cautious tale is the bait and switch that happened when I got to the dollar rental counter. I read all the terms from Expedia I was prepared to enjoy my time in Charlotte. I call this a bait and switch because in September my flight got delayed and changed from Delta. I called and wrote an email because i explained I landed an hour later after I was scheduled to pick up the rental car. I called the location and the number to dollar rent a car just to confirm that I would have a car for the weekend. I was reminded about the deposit then. I was prepared to allow them to swipe my card for incidentals for a maximum of $300. I was quoted $250 on my credit card from the call I made in September to the location about being delayed an hour. I was assured I could move my time to pick up by having Expedia call dollar and I received an email following up from a dollar reservation specialist. Here is where the bait and switch comes in to this story. I had my credit card ready and my license. I tell the employee looking up my reservation I had $300 to hold for incidentals. He said what kind of card do you have? I replied I have a MasterCard and he then says "we typically put a $350 hold on mastercards. I said "what?" He said yes depending on what kind of card you have it's variable but since you have a MasterCard it will be $350. Mind you I was quoted $250 from a girl I spoke with in September. I repeated that wasn't available and I could use my debit card for the amount of the difference. That employee said unless I submitted to a credit check to use the full amount on my debit card then "we were at a stand-still!" I asked to speak to the manager. This guy I dealt with has no business dealing with me. I came in good faith did everything correct surely the manager would understand. I waited for the manager. His name is Mike. He was dealing with another person renting so I went back to the line to wait to speak with him. He calls me over 5 minutes later and I explain what the situation was. He insisted the only way he would be able to help me without running a credit check using my debit card would be to place the full $350 on my card. I asked to split the hold between a debit and credit. That is not an option. It has since become clear they never wanted to rent to me and it has been a huge waste of time. Mike did let me charge my phone until I got to 4%. That was the nicest thing about any of this. After we went through every scenario I submitted to a credit check because you know I'm stuck 800 miles from home. I didn't get approved that way and as soon as Mike handed me a printout of the decline he swiftly brushed me off. He got on his radio to reply to someone to show me how official he was. I originally paid $72 for this original agreement through Expedia. At that point my phone wasn't charged enough for me to call my credit card company to see if they could increase the limit and No one at this counter even offered an iota of concern or some level of service because "rules are rules." Its not like I had a North Carolina license. I could understand why a hold was being placed from this location. I see they don't need my money or any future business at this point and I go to Alamo where they have terrific customer service. They got me out with a rental within 10 minutes. It was $334 compared to the $112 I had planned on spending but the last minute rental had to be made and I couldn't endure my vacation in the rental counter area. I had to go because I had plans to get to Asheville and I was already late so that wasn't a fight about price I could make with Alamo at the time. I was put at their mercy because the way dollar rental car does business. Dollar rental car will continue to hear from me until they make this right. They need to pay the difference in what I was originally going to pay and what I was forced to pay. I was told $250 hold in September from this location and when I get there it is $350 after I explained I had $300 and a MasterCard. Terrible way to do business.
