| - I moved to Charlotte area 3 months ago and there are a few things I miss about Chicagoland, one of which is Mariano's, the awesome grocery chain with quality food, reasonable prices and helpful employees. In fact, I was shocked to find that overall grocery is more expensive here than in Chicagoland.
The three grocery chains in the Charlotte area (Publix, Harris Teeter and Food Lion) can't compare to Mariano's, but I like Harris Teeter better than the other two. Two things have stood out for me about this Harris Teeter: bakery and pet food. Their bakery makes multigrain croissant, which I have grown to like because of Mariano's. I bought some Ricotta cheesecake and Tiramisu from their dessert case (when they were on sale), both of which were worth the calories. The artisan bread selection is good, though again I miss Mariano's artisan bread, especially the fact that they allow you to buy less than a full loaf quantity (even just a few slices if you want).
In the pet food isle, I have found some lesser known brand with quality ingredients and reasonable prices. The big brands are often on sale.
The selection of craft beers is good with many local beers. Too bad that they don't offer mix & match 6 pack, like, guess where? Mariano's!
I have tried some of the soups in their prepared food section, and they were pretty good.
