| - The day I moved to Madison I asked three different people that I saw walking around where I should eat and unanimously I received the Old Fashioned as the destination of choice. What I wasn't warned of was that no matter when you go there you're going to end up with over an hour wait, even for just two people. And something that shouldn't come as a shock to anyone trying to eat out in Madison, they don't take reservations. So if you want to eat here you're going to have to suck it up and wait. Luckily for me the few times that I've gone, there have been concerts on the square so I was able to put down my name and they will text you when your table is ready. So the waiting is inevitable, but this is also a classic Madison destination if that is what you're looking for.
In terms of the ambiance of the restaurant, all of the tables/chairs/bars have a dark wood finish that get natural light from the front wall of windows during the day or become dimly lit by candles during the evening. No matter what the time of day, the restaurant is always bustling with people and has an exciting atmosphere. Every waiter/waitress that I have had here was perfectly cordial and social, with more than enough recommendations if you can't decide what you want.
Everyone will recommend this place for its cheese curds, the Classic Wisconsin dish, and they most certainly do not disappoint. Every bite is just a cheesy and fried as the last. So getting them as an appetizer or as a side for your meal is a must. The actual entree/sandwich dishes I wasn't as impressed with. They have some strange combinations of foods that weren't really to my liking, but maybe that's just me. I'm sure others have had more luck than me in their choices (it is always packed so they must be doing something right in this department), but most of my meals here have come up a bit short in the quality factor. On the order hand, the drink options have never disappointed. They have numerous beers on tap or in bottles that are found locally if that's what you want. I am more of a cocktail person and if you fall under that category too then you should most certainly get one of the many old fashioneds that they have. They all have a great combination of fresh fruit and/or spices that you will definitely enjoy. So on the drinks side of things I say A+, but the food was more of an A- or B+ in my opinion.
For the record I have not been for brunch yet (I've never been willing to wait that long for brunch) but the menu looks awesome and you should certainly give that a try if you can stand waiting.
