**I did find my local trustworthy mechanic, just not at this Firestone Complete Auto Care. **
About two months back, my water pump blew out on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. When I poured in additional liquid it freely ran out of the front of the water pump without the engine running (this fact is very important later).
In searching for someone trustworthy to fix this near my home, I came across the Firestone Complete Auto Care group. I'd been there before for something else (small) but can't remember what. The big name 'Firestone' appeared to be trustworthy so I got an estimate over the phone of $600 to replace the water pump. The guy on the phone was nice enough and said he could fit me in that day which was important.
While they had the Jeep in the back to do some diagnostics, I called around to another shop (separate review) close to this location. While they quoted me about $100 less for the water pump, it wasn't enough of a factor for me to move to them. I'm ok paying a little more for things if I trust the people I'm dealing with and get quality out the other side (also important later).
Once they were done with the diagnostics, I was bit surprised to read that the 3 year old vehicle needed all sensors and hoses replaced to the tune of more than $1300. I asked to talk to the manager because I wasn't sure how they could make this determination. I was told that these were suggestions but that if I didn't replace the hoses and sensors that they will leak afterward (no hesitation - they WILL leak afterward). When I asked how they came to this conclusion he stated that they had pressurized the system and saw it leaking - even offered to show me. Now, this is not my area of expertise, but I do know for sure that there was no way for them to put any pressure on the system while the liquid freely gushed out of the front of the water pump.
I chose to take the keys to my vehicle and proceeded to drive across the street. I did not disclose to them where I came from or what my recent experience had been but instead handed them the keys and awaited their estimate.
What the other guys found:
- No, they couldn't say I had bad hoses or anything else because the system was leaking too bad. (yes, I asked)
- They replaced the water pump and checked the entire system (at my request) but found no other issues - NONE.
- Total cost - about $550.
- Total savings - about $800
- Somehow still driving around today with the same hoses and sensors (not leaking at all in my garage btw)
I have the written estimates from both groups and name/contact information for the manager who outright lied to try to make a few more $$. (Jonathan is still there according to the website as of 3/22/2016)
I did stop by to talk to the manager after the repair was complete and I left my phone number. I did not get a call back - understandably.
Disclaimer: I was a mechanic a long time ago - just out of High School - but my trade is quite different from that now and there are far more qualified people to do this than myself. I've only witnessed deception of this type within this trade one other time and I discontinued my relationship with that group as a result.
