  • Heist is surprisingly large compared to how it looks from the street, yet all that space is certainly needed given how popular the brewery seems to be. I'm sure our visit occurring on a beautiful Saturday didn't help things, but the place was absolutely packed to the point where it was almost impossible for me to hear the bartender when I was finally able to make it to the bar - and protip to the dudebro who held up the line: Your date didn't seem all that impressed by you complaining the IPAs (snore) 'weren't hoppy enough'. Unlike the large, cavernous, echoing building the beer menu isn't very lengthy but does offer adequate variety from darker beers and sours to more trendy styles like IPAS (may I never see another one again). Flights, 10 oz pours and 16 ounce pours are all available, allowing you to try as few or as many beers as you like. The beers we tried were interesting, with a buckwheat saison and raspberry Berliner Weisse being my favourites and my companion preferring the French Toasted Joe stout and Uber Quench'l IPA (why). Beer may be what Heist brews but the cocktail menu was more substantial, as was the food menu. Food offering are the stylish sort of gussied-up comfort foods like multi-noun flatbreads and pedigreed burgers that are accordingly priced more like a fashionable bistro than the typical pub grub one might expect; giving the feel that perhaps it's a restaurant that brews beer rather than a brewery that serves food, though the large, communal tables and proliferation of massive TV sets showing sports events seem a bit incongruous in that context. The space itself is wheelchair accessible but the high tables and chairs greatly limit one's seating choices inside, though the exterior patio should present no trouble. If you don't mind crowds, sportsball, fancy burgers, dogs, and children with your brewery visits, Heist will have a lot to offer. If those things dampen your drinking experience, they also offer crowlers of beers to go which will allow you to enjoy and appreciate their brews in a peaceful location of your choosing. Either way, it's worth making a stop on any CLT-area beer tour.
