| - A fellow yelper suggested I see Stuart Penny for a hair cut as I was looking for a place that cuts curly hair. I have to say right off the bat, this is not a place that cuts curly hair.
Stuart was very friendly, as was the rest of the staff, however, I will not be returning as my cut was not worth $65, plus tax, plus a generous tip.
I want to state that it has nothing to do with Stuart as a stylist. I'm sure he's amazing with those with straight hair. He's definitely very personable and that's always appreciated when you're going to cut your hair. Always a stressful time.
The interior is very nice. It's not even a 5 min walk from King and Bathurst. They offer a wide variety of services and the salon/spa looks high end, in terms of how they've set up their venue. They offer you a drink (tea, coffee or water) when you come. And I did not have to wait long at all before Stuart took me in for my cut.
But I was looking for a curly cut. For me that means dry cutting or a combination of wet and dry (which I prefer). When you cut curly hair wet and then "style" the curls instead of letting them dry in their natural form, you do not get the best cut. Because tomorrow, after the hair has been washed out and you dry it as you normally do, your curls will rise up at odd lengths, because how much it rises when air dried will not have been taken into account. Which is exactly what has happened with my hair. I now have hair looks misshapen.
I'm sure Stuart is a great stylist. I'm sure this place is worth the prices it asks for from straight haired customers, or those who do not live on the curly side. But this place is not right for anyone who is looking for a cut that will actually compliment the texture of their natural curls.
Lesson to takeaway from this: if you ever find the perfect stylist who cuts curly hair, marry them.
