Being from California, I always look forward to an opportunity to get some Soul or Cajun food when I'm in this part of the country so Boudreaux's seemed like a good choice. While walking up to the restaurant the neighborhood reminded me of the funky shops and unique flavors found on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, CA. Far from scaring me away, this was an endearing throw-back to home. Across the street it was Hookah night and the sweet tobacco scents drifted in the air. As I shoved tightly folded dollars into the parking pay box ($3.00 which suprised me in an area so far from uptown) I noticed a fun looking book store on the back side of the restaurant.
When my dining partner and I walked in we were seated quickly although the waiter seemed a little brusque (in fairness he did appear to be the only wait-staff that evening). I finally settled on Ettouffee, Rice and of course corn bread. I was suprised to find that the potent spices and flavors that usually accompany this dish seemed to be lacking. The meal was fine, but a little bland for my preference and the cornbread was actually a little dry.
If you prefer milder Cajun cuisine, this might be the spot for you. If you're looking for something more authentic... keep looking and let me know where you find it!
