| - This place is great! There are 4 gyms all within walking distance from my home and I chose this one. Why? 1. I don't need super fancy, crazy expensive glam workout classes 2. I don't want to feel like I need to put on makeup and buy a new wardrobe to work out, and frankly, 3. I can't afford something super fancy (like the ones with a swimming pools and saunas) and really am not sure how comfortable I'd be at those other places (plus would likely excel in my workout avoidance techniques by sipping smoothies and having spa treatments I couldn't afford). Julia, Chris and Bruce (the owners) are all super friendly and helpful. I feel comfortable and warmly welcomed as soon as I walk in the place (but not like you're walking into a shoe store where people are paid on commission). It's casual and relaxed. There's cable tv (WOO HOO - huge motivating factory in my working out, I'm embarassed to admit), lots of equipment, a yoga/workout room with mats and one of those swingy boxing bags that hang from the ceiling (clearly I'm an Olympic boxer). On the main floor there are treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical trainers, weight machines, a climbing wall, rowing machines, an interesting looking ladder climbing machine and lots more that I have no idea what they do, but am planning on discovering. I feel totally comfortable going up to Julia, Chris or Bruce and asking them how to use a machine if I'm not sure (luckily my friend comes with me and she knows how, but when I go alone, I feel just as comfortable). I go in the late mornings during the week and find that it's never crowded, always a few people around, but I like that there are all ages and ethnicities there, so I don't feel like it's some snooty 20-something all white place either. There's almost always a trainer working with a client and it's nice to see that there are all different ages/body types in the place as well. Downstairs is a weight room with barbell-like weights (obviously I'm an Olympic weight lifter as well), but I've never found there to be creepy muscle guys anywhere in the place. People here do their own stuff but are nice and it's really the perfect kinda feel if you're serious about getting your workout done. It's a practical gym. As a woman, I find that it's comfortable, I always feel safe here, never bothered/ogled/harassed. Membership includes classes (most are around lunch and dinner times during the week, and on the weekends). I believe that if you sign up for a one year membership, that you get one session with a personal trainer. I've seen 3 of the trainers there in action and they all seem friendly, professional and seem to really know what they're doing. The women's change room is big, with a wide wooden bench, toilet stalls, hair dryer and showers. I also gotta admit that since I was only able to afford signing up for the minimum (2 months), I wasn't sure if I was going to renew it and didn't want to waste money on a lock. They thoughtfully have locks with keys you can use during your visit (for free), which, admittedly makes my life easier. The pricing here is good, less expensive than most of the other gyms nearby. I really hope that I have the budget to renew my membership because I'm super happy here and do want to keep coming back!
