| - Unlike local stores in other regions, Heinies has been able to fight back against national chains to retain a thriving market share and high quality local experience in Cleveland and we should be damn proud. I'm giving Heinies 5 stars not because there isn't room for improvement, but because they're easily in the 90th percentile when it comes to grocery stores in America.
Heinies succeeds in walking the line between the "big box" mega-chains and specialty, high priced gourmet stores. Having lived in other states, I've noticed there are rarely local grocery chains at all. Why? Because they've been annihilated by "bargain buy" megastores like Giant Eagle, Meijer, Giant, Walmart, etc. I realize we're in a recession and every penny counts but it's also clear Americans everywhere are deciding that price isn't everything when it comes to food. I mean, it's also supposed to taste good and be nutritious, right? That's the reason upscale megachains like Wegman's, Whole Foods, etc. are making a huge impact everywhere! So, it's time for me to weigh in on why Heinies is the best of both worlds.
Let's not waste time on anything that is true of all grocery stores, like they're really busy on Saturdays or paper goods are less expensive at Marcs. Okay? Okay.
PROS: For the size of the store, they have a HUGE selection of products at a variety of price points. They really have almost every product you would find at Giant Eagle or, inversely, Whole Foods. Their store brand is a great option whether you're buying canned beans, granola, cookies, whatever. It's awesome to see their commitment to local brands and trying to provide more local produce. They also carry a wide variety of organic and gluten free products and run great sales every week. Their cashiers are super efficient so even when checkout lines are long, waits aren't. The store is clean, it doesn't smell weird and there are helpful employees everywhere if you need one. Other perks are the fantastically fresh salad bar, great wine/beer selection, tasty store-baked bread and huge produce and fine cheese selection.
CONS: I'm sort of a snob, so while I fine their produce and seafood departments to be well above average, I'd like them to keep pushing the bar. The combination of narrow aisles and mammoth shopping carts can make navigating the store a particular challenge when they're really busy.
The parking lot layout to this particularly Heinies is very strange but don't fret; after you've been there a few times, I promise it'll be like second nature.
