  • **Balayage (to sweep/paint in French) creates a sun-kissed natural looking hair color with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines** I called the salon to see if they offered a balayage service, they said they did and it started at $53. I made an appointment for an early morning, knowing it was a school and it could take a while. I have been to several hair schools, and always had great experiences because the teachers walk the students through the process, or at least check-in along the way. I will never go to Cartsen again. The student painted my (virgin,blonde) hair, but did so as if she were using foils and highlighting my hair in a traditional way. There was nothing organic, soft, or natural about the end result. In fact, the end result looked like I had my hair highlighted using foils several months ago and now have serious roots. What concerns me the most is that the teacher stepped in several times during the process and never corrected the student. In the end, the lines were so harsh that it looked like I had a brown bowl on my head of bleached blonde hair. When the teacher asked how I liked it, and I told her the truth, she encouraged me to wear my hair over to the side so I wouldn't see the lines. This is just unacceptable, and I cannot believe the teachers would allow me to walk out looking this way. If I were a student there I would look for a better school where the teachers keep you informed of new/trending techniques your clients will ask for. If you don't know the fundamentals of a balayage (painted, soft, natural, less noticeable regrowth), do not offer it. ***Update: a representative from Carsten has contacted me via Yelp (not via telephone) offering the services of an advanced student or Carsten to fix the balayage. Unfortunately, I do not check my Yelp account daily and have already paid $100 to have it fixed by a professional. I appreciate the offer, but I'd probably be wary of another advanced student - she was 17 days away from graduating.
