  • We've there for 3 years and I'm going to qualify a few statements. First, I'm not holding certain things against Gateway...for example, lightning outages, or fallen trees (which have happened). Those are accidents from freak storms. Second, the office staff are great and not many of the issues here have anything to do with them. They're good folks, friendly, and helpful. I can't really fault them for much. However, here's the rest. Our apartment has flooded around 5 times, maybe 6. This came from our building having clogged rain gutters, and they overflowed and dumped into our back area during heavy rains which filled the yard with water. I have been out there numerous times at 1 or 2 am bailing out the back yard to keep the indoor flooding at a minimum. Our bedroom carpet and pad have had to be stripped out 3-4 times, pad replaced, and carpet washed. Their solution was to put sand bags in our back yard after the 5th-6th flood and their efforts at a drainage solution were late at best. We've had to tear our apartment apart and put the bed in the living room while the carpet was washed, dried for 2-3 days with blowers and then reinstalled (same carpet) with new pad. We ruined around $200 or so worth of all our linen trying to stop the flooding, and after a lot of begging (for months) they gave us a $100 gift card to buy new linen. No break on rent, no release from the lease, only the offer to relocate to a hotter, upstairs unit. Now that we've left they want us to pay for the carpet that flooded--at least that's what I assume their hefty charges are for since the apartment was in great shape when we left. There was no mold mitigation after the flooding, and we found what looked like black mold in our vents and tried to clean it as best we could. We did mention this to them but who knows if they ever addressed it--they certainly did not while we lived there. Next, the hot water heater is a boiler that supplies 6-8 buildings with hot water. This has broken around once or so every year--including a few days in the winter when it's somewhat cold. Parts take days to arrive--days when we were without reasonable hot water. Cold/lukewarm shower in January? Yuck. The A/C chiller system also runs 6-8 buildings (you don't have a dedicated unit) so when it dies the whole block of buildings is down and it too takes several days for parts. It too has died 3-4 times in the last 3 years. Sometimes they bring out a big mobile condenser on a semi-trailer to fill in while parts arrive. Christie L asserted that there have been a number of vehicle thefts here--and I can confirm two of those incident. One was my motorcycle stolen from a lit, covered parking spot on Halloween and the other was my neighbors moto stolen out of his truck. A third bike was targeted for theft and they took an electric grinder to the ignition but failed to get thru. There is supposedly a "courtesy patrol" aka security guy around. I've seen them about 15 times since we moved in (3 years ago). I'm curious to know where they were on Halloween, or what they were doing when a noisy electric grinder was fired up at 3 am to steal a moto. The cops aren't out real often for domestic violence calls...maybe once every 2-3 months though of our neighbors had a super cool looking tracking ankle bracelet on. There was a fatal shooting across the street last year and another the year before down the road at the Motel 6. If you live in any of the A or B unit buildings (A especially) put Scottsdale Dispatch on speed dial--the Rogue Bar (a rathole across the street) likes to go loud and late (2-3 AM) and you will hear it. Be prepared to call Scottsdale PD a few times per loud night (which can be Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays etc). Our apartment has an outer brick wall (many here do) which heats up in the summer, and radiates the heat back into the house long after dark. Our A/C ran 24/7 in the summer and it never gets below 80ish in the coolest part of the house. It just can't keep up. The power has fried on property a few times from shorts in the hot tub pump system (which is sometimes hot enough but the jets have been weak for 3 years). The pools are pretty good. The gym is actually really decent, and it has wifi and they've remodeled the office and the pool areas too--quite nicely. It's right on the Orbit (Earth) bus line which is a great free way to get to ASU with the bums. A few neighbors have pitbulls which has upped the trashy look, along with the stashed shopping carts in the stair wells. Also have encountered some drug use with the residents here more recently. I was maybe thinking I had been too harsh, but then the parking lot lights went out my last two nights there so...nahhh...this is good. So dear Gateway: when you respond to this, you can start by knocking off the BS charges against our deposit as a small step to making things right...we never got written up and paid rent on time every time.
