| - Advertising works (well at least this time). For months I had noticed their ad in En Route mag but never considered staying since its a significant distance from downtown, but then there was a rumble in town. And that big ol yeehaw of a Stampede was being thrown down and all of the hotels increased their already ridiculous rates and so, I wound up here.
The modern and contemporary lobby and cafe is a nice surprise on a university campus. The rooms are just as modern, but cramped, or at least in the standard double I was in. Note, this isn't unlike other hotels, but perhaps I expected a little more space considering how large the hotel and campus are. There is a definite long term stay and conference element to this hotel: full coin laundry machines and conference rooms welcomed us as we left the elevator on the 5th floor. And the room keys are something to behold! I've never seen fobs serving as keys before. How very high tech. This hotel, at least during Stampede, seemed to be catering to a very mixed crowd. Youth sports teams, RVers (2 were parked in the round about while we were there), and those looking for a drunken good time all sharing space!
Complimentary breakfast accompanies some of the room, but not all. I was lucky to be in a breakie included rate. I overheard the server charging someone else $12.50 for the same continental breakfast which included fresh fruit, pastries, hard boiled eggs, cereal, juice and coffee. In my opinion, certainly not 12.50 worth. But the juices were fresh, the eggs warm and the fruit plentiful.
The best part about this location though (or worst, depending on your footwear) is the proximity to the LRT. It's about 800 meters, but a beautiful walk through the campus. With cabs at a premium, and traffic at an almost standstill in places, I thanked my lucky public transit stars many times over our few nights, and enjoyed watching the bunnies hopping around the paths that led to the hotel.
