| - When I was gowing up in Pittsburgh, Monroeville Mall was "THE" mall. Now I don't mean that as in, it was the best mall. No, it was just that mall that was closest to home and thus where we'd shop and the mall I went to when I was teenager. I spent hundreds of dollar at the video arcade that used to be right near the front entrance. This mall also has the distinction of being the sight of filming for the original Dawn of the Dead. That mall, however is gone - gone is Horne's and Kaufman's and Kay Bee Toys and G.C. Murphy's. Gone is Cutlery World and Chess King and The Limited (not that I ever shopped there). Gone is the fountain. Hell, they don't ever have the awesome Christmas house for Santa anymore. Now they jam the train and the Santa meet-and-greet area all in the same courtyard. But, you know, what things change and thats fine. I'm not complaining that these stores are gone. I'm complaining about what has taken their place. I counted 5 stores that sold sports jersey's and memorabilia. Yes, Pittsburgh is a big sports town, but jesus people, do you really need FIVE stores that all sell essentially the same thing? In addition to that I count AT LEAST five jewelry stores. Despite that fact that there is a relatively new Barnes and Noble outside and Macy's is one of the anchor stores, and the fact that it was pretty crowded on the Saturday before Christmas, as the death-knell for this mall. When lived in North Carolina, there was a very old mall that looked just like this with the jewelry stores and sports shops, within a year it was knocked down and a Super Target and Super Walmart were put in its place. I sense a similar fate for Monroeville Mall in the not too distant future. I didn't go here because I needed to finish Christmas shopping, as much for nostalgia reasons. It was disturbing. There are several other newer malls in the area, if you must shop at a mall, I suggest going elsewhere.
