  • Re: Plastic Bags I just began shopping at Sprouts for about 3 months now. Sprouts is market as an organic, environmentally friendly, and community oriented store. On my first visit I took notice of the availability and usage of plastic bags. There are plastic bags for the muffins, plastic bags for the meat products, plastic bags for produce, plastic bags for items in barrels, and then when you get to the cashier you can put those plastic bags in yet another plastic bag. I also noticed that the majority of your customers don't carry reusable bags. On my second visit I forgot my reusable bag. Therefore, when I came to the cashier I asked her to please fit all the groceries in one plastic bag. She was proceeded (even after I assured her that it was fine to use one bag) to use more than one bag saying that she was trying to "care" for the merchandise by putting it in its own bag. I again assured her not to worry about it and had to firmly tell her to use only one plastic bag. On April 18 of this year I returned to your store. I bought numerous vegetables and I didn't use a plastic bag for each vegetable. When I got to the cashier the body language toward my naked vegetables was hesitance. I admit I bought beets and these do involve an above average amount of dirt. The cashier grabbed the beets with her index finger and her thumb while raising her other fingers hence trying to avoid contact. Again, I asked the cashier to please put it all in one plastic bag. As she was placing the beets in the bag and other groceries she felt they were not arranged in a way that they could fit. I told her not worry about it that I could fit the remainder in my reusable bag. She kept on gesturing like she could not fit them in. Finally, I told her I would do it if she couldn't. She pulls everything out and throws that plastic bag in the trash and gets another "new" plastic bag. And this is where I have had enough of your store's wastefulness and hypocrisy! If Sprout's sincerely cared about the customer's health and the environment there would not be plastic bags in the store at all. In addition, there be an excessive use of them. Sprout's sells organic products which is directly consumed by the customer and therefore directly benefits the customers' health. Sprouts uses plastics bags to "care" for merchandise and therefore customers feel a sincere effort was made to "care" for them as well. However, using plastics bags is a temporary benefit with long term environmental consequences and that is not caring for anyone. This conveniently selfish use of plastic bags will harm the environment. Therefore, effecting your customers and generations of community members to come. Sprouts website says "Our community. Our responsibility". Clearly, your company needs some more work before that is entirely true. Ironically, your store offers recycling of plastics bags. However, your store is a primary source of those bags! I have seen your cashiers double bag many items. Alternatives such as paper bags and reusable bags can fulfill the same purpose. These observations absolutely contradict your store's claims of being communal, organic, and environmentally friendly. It also shows me that your store and customers are merely interested in an "appearance" and "trend" of being healthy and environmentally conscious. Please make a sincere effort to reevaluate Sprouts overall habits. Ensure that Sprouts sincerely upholds the appearance Sprouts sells. I am sure your customers can adjust and survive just fine without plastic bags. Regards, C.Amezquita
